I am having so much fun , I have been knitting and shopping, and trying to guess what my pal will like . I am hoping to get the package off in about 10 days, this should give it plenty of time to wing it's way across the ocean. Should we put a pattern in with the yarn and needles ?

Wonderful Ronnie! I'm sure your pal will be delighted to get their gift so soon :) You are more than welcome to put in a pattern with your yarn and needles if you like. If budget is an issue, maybe you could include a free one you've found somewhere on the internet? I'm sure your pal will love whatever you come up with :)
